Filmmaker Aaron Sorkin, Oscar-winning writer of The Social Network and creator of The West Wing, brings a pivotal moment in recent American history to the big screen with his characteristic wit, intelligence and insight on full display. What was intended to be a peaceful demonstration by anti-Vietnam War protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention turned into a violent clash with police and the National Guard. The organisers of the protest — including Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen), Jerry Rubin (Jeremy Strong), Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne) and Bobby Seale (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) — were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot. The trial that followed was one of the most notorious in history.
Sorkin’s film couldn’t be more timely, coming in a year which has seen regular protests in cities around the world, and various authority figures questioning the motivations and rights of protesters. The Trial of the Chicago 7 retells the incredible events of this trial in hugely entertaining style, with firecracker dialogue and pointed political debate, performed by a brilliant ensemble cast.
