Based on a true story, it is easy to see why Joseph Merrick’s captivating tale of human dignity caught the auteur’s attention. Severely deformed, John Merrick (changed from Joseph for the film) is terribly mistreated by Victorian society, in particular at a freak show where he has found sad employment. It is only when he comes under the care of doctor Frederick Treves that he is able to communicate his intelligence, sensitivity and humility. Featuring a performance from the late, great John Hurt that is both measured and staggeringly heartbreaking, The Elephant Man remains one of Lynch’s most affecting films.
