The outskirts of Gioia Tauro, a coastal town in the southern Italian region of Reggio Calabria is the setting for Jonas Carpignano’s second feature, the middle film of a planned trilogy which began with 2015’s Mediterranea. Romani teenager Pio (Pio Amato), one of the supporting characters in the first picture takes centre stage in a riveting coming-of-age story. Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, The Ciambra won Best Director and Best Editor awards at the 2018 David di Donatello (Italy’s equivalent of the Academy Awards).

The screening on Tuesday 19 June (17.45) will be introduced by Romani activists and board members of Romano Lav, Valerie Bila and Davie Donaldson, and will be followed by an informal discussion in the bar.
