Details

It's December 1969 and Thelonious Monk is in Paris. Ahead of his concert that evening, he records a programme for French television. These rediscovered rushes show a Monk who is in the grip of the stereotypes from which he tries to escape.

This newly constructed film reveals the talent of this great artist, who wants to exist only for his music, alongside a portrait of a hollow media machine. Here is the cold machine in action, deconstructing these rushes as ghosts. The factory of caricatures and clichés is loudly at work. Deaf, smiling, ambiguous, admiring and sickening. Holding the microphone without listening, marvelling without seeing. Attempting to overturn the point of view. Here is Thelonious at work, struggling through the ordeal. It's as if he has landed on a strange planet, where a portrait is being constructed that he cannot escape, exhausted by years of undergoing this painful exercise.

Fortunately, he plays, and in doing so, he speaks volumes.
