Back at GFT for a special Mothers's Day screening.
Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar’s new feature film follows two women, Janis (Penelope Cruz) and Ana (Milena Smit), whose paths cross in a hospital where they are about to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, has no regrets and is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared and repentant. Janis tries to encourage her as they move like sleepwalkers through the hospital corridors.
The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between them, which by chance will develop and complicate, changing their lives in a decisive way.
Programme Notes for Parallel Mothers are available here.
Why we love it:
‘This glorious return to Almodóvar’s colourful universe is made magical by two firecracker performances. Long-term collaborator Penelope Cruz is at her absolute best as photographer Janis, who confidently embraces single motherhood at 40, whilst newcomer Milena Smit is equally bewitching as vulnerable teenage mum Ana. Parallel Mothers celebrates the female bonds of motherhood, sisterhood, friendship and love, and the ways in which families can be built as well as born, with enough Almodóvar melodrama to keep you glued to the screen from start to finish.’ - Claire McNaught, Marketing and Press Coordinator
