Awarded the Cannes Camera d’Or for the Best First Feature in the festival, writer/director César Diaz’s outstanding debut quietly illuminates the legacy of Guatemala’s lengthy civil war. Ernesto (Armando Espitia) is a forensic archaeologist recovering the bodies of the dead. He is approached by Nicolasa who is seeking official help to exhume the body of a husband she last saw in 1982. She believes his remains lie in a mass grave in her village. A reluctant ally, Ernesto finds his eyes are opened to the horrors of the war and its lasting impact on the survivors, including his mother.
