Details

This award-winning first fiction feature is a Caribbean coming-of-age story that examines class conflict in the Dominican Republic. As Miriam and her friend Jennifer prepare for their joint 15th birthday party, Miriam discovers the date she has met online is black. In this society whiteness is aligned with higher status, something which mixed race teenager Miriam cannot fail to see, not least in the attitude of her own (white) mother. The film slowly observes the corrosive effects on all concerned of this endemic and internalised racism. We watch as Miriam is unable to act on her feelings, effectively imprisoned by the surrounding culture. Subtle, affecting and beautifully acted, this is an impressive debut.

Part of ¡Viva! Spanish & Latin American Festival 2019 tour, presented by HOME, Manchester, with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from The National Lottery.
