This February we're marking LGBT History Month with a host of incredible new releases that beautifully chart the experience of a diverse range of LGBT characters.
Winner of four British Independent Film Awards — including Best Lead Performance for Rosy McEwan — and the Audience Award at Venice Film Festival, Georgia Oakley's directorial debut Blue Jean follows gym teacher Jean (Rosy McEwen), who is forced into living a double life as Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government prepares to pass a law stigmatizing gays and lesbians. Our screenings will include a preview on Monday 6 February (20:15) followed by a Q&A with writer/director Georgia Oakley.
It joins Inspection and Joyland as one of three new releases that mark LGBT History Month by beautifully charting the experience of LGBT characters. Inspired by director Elegance Bratton’s own experience, Inspection follows a young gay Black man who finds unexpected camaraderie in the US Marines after being kicked out of home by his mother. In Saim Sadiq's groundbreaking Pakistani drama Joyland a married man becomes infatuated with a trans woman who both must navigate the patriarchal society they live in.
