Details

Writer/director Barry Jenkins follows up the Oscar-winning Moonlight with another intimate, expertly-crafted drama detailing the joy and pain of African-American life. A heartbreaking romance based on James Baldwin’s novel, If Beale Street Could Talk centres on Tish and Fonny, a young couple in 70s Harlem who are very much in love. But Fonny is falsely accused of a crime, and as he awaits trial pressures begin to mount on their relationship.

Jenkins continually finds moments of breathtaking beauty amidst the trials his characters must endure. While the film is an unflinching look at the injustice suffered by black Americans, it is equally a celebration of the value and beauty of those lives. Performed to perfection by a flawless cast, If Beale Street Could Talk is cinema at its finest.
