Taking the lead of a newly commissioned re-creation of the World War II Odessa Massacre, theatre director Mariana Marin (played with fierce conviction by newcomer Ioana Iacob) faces having her authentic vision challenged. City council representatives and her ensemble of extras all have their own perspective on how such a hallowed event of history should be presented. Such sensitive topics could have been handled carelessly, but Radu Jude’s meticulous hand has created a meta-comedy that paints a searing critique on Romania’s perspective of history. An unmissable film that ranks as one of the director’s finest.
