Brought to GFT as part of The New Black Film Collective’s Reel Roots programme, director Kasi Lemmons captures the intensity and drama of the life of an inspirational woman whose story has never been told on the big screen before. This is the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery and transformation into one of America's greatest heroes, whose courage, ingenuity and tenacity freed hundreds of enslaved people and changed the course of history.

The African-American activist and abolitionist is played by British actor Cynthia Erivo who also co-wrote and performed the film’s original song ‘Stand Up’. Tubman escaped from slavery and went on to play an integral part in helping other enslaved people escape through the Underground Railroad. She was also a scout, spy, nurse and freedom fighting soldier for the Union Army during the American Civil War.

This screening will be followed by poetry performances by Courtney Stoddart and Yemurai Chaza.

Courtney Stoddart is an acclaimed Scottish poet, writer and performer. In 2019 she was selected for BBC Word’s First, named as one of YWCA’s 30 under 30 in 2020, and is an Ignite Fellow for the Scottish Book Trust as of 2021. She has written for publications such as Gal-Dem and Black Ballad.

Yemurai Chaza is a poet and creative with an appreciation for literature, music and science. Her writing is a colourful reflection of her Zimbabwean heritage and experiences growing up in Scotland. Her current work echoes the many seasons of life, exploring topics surrounding identity.
