Shot in the contemporary art world, Female Human Animal is a darkly romantic psychothriller about a creative woman disenchanted with what modern life has to offer her. This is a truly hybrid adventure in film, taking a leaf from the invitation of the surrealists. Based around a real-life Tate retrospective of the surrealist Leonora Carrington, curated by Chloe Aridjis, the film takes Aridjis' ‘documentary reality’ as a leaping off point for putting on screen the imaginary life of her fears, dreams and desires, in ways that would otherwise remain inaccessible to the camera.
