Writer-director Carolina Cavalli’s darkly comic feature debut received its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. It follows Amanda (Benedetta Porcaroli), who has returned home to Italy and her family after a few years studying in Paris. With no plans, Amanda decides to seek out an old childhood friend whose agoraphobia has kept her mostly inside since they were last in contact. The combination of both women’s neuroses only accentuates Amanda’s desire to rekindle the friendship, even if it’s a situation that no one seems likely to profit from.
Visually vibrant and filled with Cavalli’s offbeat humour, this is a deliciously satirical character study of a 20-something looking for purpose.
