Nominated for Best Documentary at the 2023 Academy Awards, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed is the extraordinary story of internationally renowned artist and activist Nan Goldin, told through her slideshows, intimate interviews, ground-breaking photography and rare footage of her fight to hold the Sackler family accountable for the opioid crisis.

Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras (Citizenfour), the film interweaves Goldin’s past and present, the deeply personal and urgently political. From P.A.I.N.’s actions at renowned art institutions to Goldin’s photography of her friends and peers through her epic The Ballad of Sexual Dependency and her legendary 1989, NEA-censored AIDS exhibition Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing.

Why we love it:

'This is so much more than your typical documentary about an artist’s life and influences. There will be no plaudits from the art world elite seen here! I loved the way that Laura Poitras expertly combines the rich imagery of Nan Goldin’s work with stunning 80’s archive footage and present-day filming of protests at museums around the world. Each insight into key moments and relationships that Poitras and Goldin choose to share, adds layer and layer of meaning and emotion, as the film builds to its powerful conclusion. Goldin’s deeply personal fight to hold the Sackler family accountable is told with respect and care. A rallying cry for freedom, self-expression and justice.'
