About the Film

Fashion is an act of defiance in Papicha, a feisty first feature from Algerian director Mounia Meddour. Nedjma (Lyna Khoudri), aka Papicha, is a student of French language and culture at Algiers University. She frequently escapes an oppressive campus with best friend Wassila (Shirine Boutella), applies some lipstick, a stylish dress and heads for a night on the town. This is Algiers in the 1990s and the rising Islamist tide is being felt everywhere. Papicha decides to stage a fashion show in opposition to all those who are trying to control and limit the lives of her fellow students.

Glasgow Film CEO, Allison Gardner, said: "I was lucky to see this film, directed by Mounia Meddour, at Cannes 2019. Set in Algiers in 1997, the story follows four young women who rely on each other amid growing oppression. It’s a moving film that beautifully highlights and captures friendship amongst women as they form who they are in the face of external threats."
