Our July Programme


Glasgow Film Theatre’s July programme has been announced, featuring some of the biggest titles of 2023 and special screenings for film-lovers. Not only will we be welcoming Christopher Nolan's epic Oppenheimer to GFT, but we are also the only cinema in Scotland offering the chance to catch it in stunning 70mm. Tickets for our 70mm screenings are on sale now, with standard screenings being released very soon. As a way of preparing for his latest big screen blockbuster, we’ll also be giving GFT audiences another chance to see Nolan’s time-bending thriller, Tenet, on 35mm.


There are new releases galore next month with Greta Gerwig's vision of Barbie and Wes Anderson's Asteroid City both hitting our big screens. We’ll also be welcoming jet black Norwegian comedy Sick of Myself and laugh-out-loud British comedy-thriller A Kind of Kidnapping, plus a special Q&A with director/writer Dan Clark and actor Kelley Wenham on Thursday 20 July.


Back (again!) by popular demand: Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s hilarious, one-woman play, Fleabag will be returning to GFT for a National Theatre Live: Encore screening on Monday 10 July. We’ll also be welcoming back some recent favourites from Glasgow Film Festival, including: La Syndicaliste starring Isabelle Hubert; touching drama Mother and Sonthe outrageous Smoking Causes Coughing; deeply-felt exploration of friendship The Eight Mountains returnsand Mark Cousins’ playful homage to a directorial giant My Name is Alfred Hitchcock.


Documentary fans will have the chance to catch a varied and vibrant programme featuring Name Me Lawand which follows deaf Kurdish refugee Lawand as he struggles to settle into a new home in Yorkshire; charming love-letter to literature Hello, BookstoreVinay Shukla’s nail-bitingly tense film on India’s radically changing media landscape, While We Watched; and the hilarious Shabu, plus a Q&A with director Shamira Raphaëla on Monday 3 July.


Music is in the air with Ziggy Stardust: The Global Premiere, marking 50 years since David Bowie’s last performance as the titular alter-ego; Techno-focused F(r)ee: Behind the Scenes of the Free Party Movement; and homage to the creative geniuses behind some of the most iconic album covers of all time, Squaring the Circle.


Next month we’ll be launching some exciting new seasons, including a CineMasters Season dedicated to Ryuichi Sakamoto. We are celebrating the life of one of the most important artists of our era, who sadly passed away in March this year, with a selection of films featuring some of his most celebrated scores including: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, which Sakamoto also stars in; The Last Emperor and The Revenant in 4KWe'll also be screening Stephen Nomura Schible’s exhilarating exploration of Sakamoto’s life and work, Coda.


Our Schools Out! Family Favourites season boasts four hand-picked films for the whole family: Anime auteur Makoto Shinkai's SuzumeMarcel the Shell with Shoes OnSpider-Man: Across the Spider-verse; and Steven Spielberg's classic E.T. The Extra Terrestrial in 4K.


For the first time, we’ll also be welcoming the UK’s largest festival of Arab cinema, SAFAR Festival, to GFT. From 1-8 July, we’ll be showcasing three incredible new films from Algeria, Morocco and Palestine: The Last QueenThe Damned Don't Cry (plus a special Q&A with director Fyzal Boulifa) and Alam (The Flag) — as well as a free family-friendly screening of the beautifully animated Dounia and the Princess of Aleppo.


Alongside Asteroid City, which is screening until 20 July, our CineMastersWes Anderson season concludes next month with The French Dispatch on Sunday 2 and Wednesday 5 July. Like Anderson’s brand new sci-fi dramedy Asteroid CityThe French Dispatch features a star-studded cast in a delightful ode to journalism and literary magazines.


With the World Cycling Championships taking place in Glasgow from 3-13 August, we are screening two cycling documentaries in the run-up: The Last Rider, which tells the unbelievable story of cyclist Greg LeMond who came back from the brink of death to win the closest race in the history of the Tour de France; and the exhilarating and immersive Time Trial. Selected tickets for The Last Rider are on sale now, with tickets for Time Trial on sale 24 July.


This month we’ll be welcoming some old favourites back to GFT, including further 40th Anniversary screenings of Scotland-set classic Local Hero (back due to popular demand, following the screenings last month), a 4K restoration of Steven Spielberg’s timeless thrill-ride Jaws, and the classic 1935 musical Top Hat, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.


On Monday 17 July our Scorsese of the Month screenings continue with Public SpeakingSelected and introduced by journalist Eilidh Akilade, this is a rare chance to see the feature-length documentary on the big screen. Public Speaking centres on Martin Scorsese’s long-time friend and fellow New Yorker Fran Lebowitz, a writer known for her unique and acerbic take on modern life.


Next month’s Access Film Club will feature a screening of the endlessly-watchable romcom The Wedding Singer, on Monday 10 July. Together with The National Autistic Society Scotland, we are delighted to provide the Access Film Club screenings with post-film discussions in a friendly and welcoming environment. Movie Memories, GFT's dementia-friendly film programme will continue with Top Hat on Thursday 13 July at 11am.


On Tuesday 18 July we’ll be hosting our next Visible Cinema screening. Our D/deaf and Hard of Hearing friendly film programme continues with Name Me LawandTake 2, our free, family-friendly programme, continues to take place every Saturday morning to keep even the littlest film fans happy.
