Joe (Stanley Baker) is a German migrant who has been living in Britain since the outbreak of the Second World War. When he receives a mysterious phone call claiming that the father he believed long-dead is still alive, he returns to his homeland to investigate. There he is surprised to learn his father had remarried the much younger Lisa (Mai Zetterling) with both taking refuge in the home of a physician named Dr von Brecht (Peter Cushing). As Joe struggles to find out the truth, he becomes increasingly convinced a conspiracy is afoot in Quentin Lawrence’s twisty and intriguing thriller.
