The Last King of Scotland
Glasgow’s very own James McAvoy stars in Kevin Macdonald’s compelling fiction debut, set against the turbulent backdrop of 1970s Uganda. A young Scottish medic, freshly graduated from university, travels to Uganda to volunteer at a missionary clinic. By chance, he befriends the infamous Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, leading to devastating consequences.
To celebrate our exclusive In Conversation event with James McAvoy, Glasgow Film Festival presents a special screening of Macdonald’s first narrative feature. The film follows Nicolas, a fictional medic, who becomes entangled in Ugandan President Idi Amin’s brutal regime. The charismatic yet violent Amin forms an unexpected bond with Nicolas as he takes a liking to his Scottish heritage, fueled by the dictator’s bizarre claim of being the ‘King of Scotland.’ Macdonald’s film offers a chilling, fictionalized glimpse into the horrors of Amin’s rule, featuring a standout cast that includes Gillian Anderson, David Oyelowo, and a career-defining, Oscar-winning portrayal of Idi Amin by Forest Whitaker. A haunting and authentic exploration of power, manipulation, and moral compromise.
