Rebels + introduction
Tina Bara, Cornelia Schleime, and Gabriele Stötzer are three daring women who channelled their defiance of the oppressive GDR regime into groundbreaking art. Active in the underground scenes of East Berlin, Dresden, and Erfurt during the 1970s and ’80s, these artists used photography, Super-8 films, and performance to challenge state propaganda with intimate, evocative imagery. Their works, steeped in vulnerability and resilience, captured the raw essence of their lives under surveillance by the Stasi, which sought to manipulate and suppress them.
Pamela Meyer-Arndt’s Rebels is a vivid exploration of their radical creativity and the personal cost of resistance. Whether it was Schleime leaving the GDR under duress, Bara grappling with the transition to the West, or Stötzer choosing to stay and fight, each woman’s journey reflects a powerful struggle for artistic and personal freedom. With rare archival materials now coming to light, this documentary honours their courage and their enduring legacy as pioneers of female resistance in the face of tyranny.
