Kim's Video
In this genre-bending adventure, filmmaker David Redmon follows a trail of celluloid breadcrumbs to Sicily, hunting down the legendary collection of NYC’s Kim's Video store — a staggering archive of 55,000 films on tape that appeared to have vanished into thin air.
Kim's Video wasn't your average rental spot — it was a film lover's paradise that became a nexus point for New York’s cinephiles, from its humble beginnings in the backroom of a Manhattan dry-cleaning shop. Its architect, the enigmatic Yongman Kim, built an empire of rare and wild cinema, patronised by the likes of Jim Jarmusch, The Coen Brothers, Chloe Sevigny, and Quentin Tarantino. When the digital age came knocking in 2008, Kim put out an unusual offer: Whoever wants it can take the entire collection, but the condition is to preserve it and allow anyone with a Kim’s Video membership to access it at any time.
Enter Salemi, a small Italian town looking to raise its cultural profile, which scooped up the massive archive with grand promises — and… ulterior motives. Then the trail went cold.
That's where Redmon, who credits Kim's Video for his own film education, picks up the scent. Armed with a camera and pure determination, he goes on a madcap adventure to Sicily searching for answers about the collection's fate and dreaming up plans for its rescue from obscurity.
Directors Redmon and Ashley Sabin craft a documentary that gleefully breaks the rules, mixing film essay with detective story, experimental cinema with heist movie thrills. It's a love letter to the enduring magic of movies, and a rallying cry for anyone who's ever fallen head over heels for cinema.DocumentaryPT1H29M182025-04-10David Redmon
