Je Tu Il Elle (I You He She) + short

‘All labels have to be thrown away’ - Chantal Akerman Akerman’s ambiguous triptych was based on her experiences hitchhiking from Paris to Brussels. A woman (played by the filmmaker) holes up in a room, obsessively eating sugar and rearranging furniture. Then we follow her hunt for love and connection – first with a truck driver, then an ex-lover. With its uninterrupted eroticism-free 10-minute lesbian sex scene, this is one of the most radical and assured sequences in any feature debut from the 1970s. Our Queer Cinema Sundays screening for March, the screening of Je Tu Il Elle on Sunday 30 March will be introduced by programmer Rosie Beattie. There's also a second chance to catch it on Wednesday 2 April. French with English subtitles The short film, Saute ma ville (Blow Up my Town) (Chantal Akerman, 13min. Belgium, 1968, no dialogue) will play alongside the feature. After dropping out of film school, Akerman made this incendiary critique of domesticity and conformity, in which she plays the manic heroine. Screening as part of our CineMasters: Chantal Akerman season, in partnership with BFI. Thanks to BFI for the film synopsis.DramaPT1H26M182025-03-30
