In the Shadow of the Sun + Imagining October

This programme highlights Jarman’s prolific work as an experimental filmmaker beyond features. In the Shadow of the Sun was compiled from a number of short Super 8mm films c. 1972-74. In its 1981 version it was blown up to 16mm and features a new original soundtrack by Throbbing Gristle. Imagining October has its origins in a BFI-organised trip to Soviet Russia which Jarman undertook along with several peers. In the film Jarman combines a pilgrimage to Sergei Eisenstein’s home with sequences that draw parallels between Stalinist repression and the political situation in Thatcher’s Britain. Giving evidence of Jarman’s talent for collaboration, Imagining October’s cinematographers included John Maybury, Sally Potter and Cerith Wyn Evans. Screening as part of the Derek Jarman: Modern Nature on Film season, programmed in collaboration with The Hunterian, University of Glasgow, which is currently presenting an exhibition focused on Jarman’s work in painting, film, queer activism and writing. Digging in Another Time: Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature is at Hunterian Art Gallery until 4 May 2025.FantasyPT1H21MU2025-04-27
