GFT Needs You Appeal - A Brighter Future for 2016

We’re in the process of our exciting makeover which will transform the GFT. When the curtain is lifted we will have a beautiful new foyer, new bars, learning suite, an accessible lift to all levels and more!

This is Phase two of our development following the construction of Cinema 3 and new accessible entrance lobby and box office.  Keeping with our previous Art Deco and Art Moderne style our architect Brian McGinlay, now with McGinlayBell Architects stays with us for the completion of the project.

Without the support of our fantastic supporters and major partners this transformation would not have been possible. Following our GFT Needs You Appeal in December we have received generous contributions from our supporters but we still need your help to raise the remaining funds to make this new space even more spectacular.

The GFT is important to so many people in Glasgow and across Scotland and this has been proved through the support we have received up until this stage of the project.

I started coming to the GFT over 20 years ago and I have shared my love for this cinema with my family. There is a real sense of community which I have felt a part of since my first visit. For me the development plans will re-create more space for socialising before and after films, and the reinstated butterfly staircase will restore the atmosphere of the ‘Golden Age’ of cinema and the legacy of the Cosmo.

The Glasgow Film Theatre has been a beacon for those of us who value quality cinema. In my early years, watching films from all over the world, the GFT was the spur I needed to seek to be a part of the magic of the movies. I very much doubt I would have achieved what I have in the movie business had the GFT not educated and inspired me in my youth. We Glaswegians are enriched by having this unique and award winning cinema in our city. Generations of cinema-goers have enjoyed the diversity of its programming, and we shouldn't underestimate the ability of film to give voice, to inspire, to unite, and above all to foster cross cultural understanding.

Iain Smith – Executive Producer Mad Max

Every penny will help us to reach our goal and help us improve our facilities and ensure the cinema will be enjoyed by future generations.

There’s lots of ways to help us raise this final amount that we are getting so close to. By giving us your support you can help make such a wonderful difference to this project.

The GFT is the heart of Glasgow for me. My parents watched movies there when Attlee was Prime Minister and I take my children there now. I love that it’s modernising and expanding and yet still retains a look that evokes the Golden Age of Hollywood. It’s pretty much my favourite cinema in the world and in a cultured city brimming with cinephiles is just irreplaceable.

Mark Millar, Scottish Comic Book Writer.
