Announcing the return of our Christmas programme in 2021

We are delighted to announce the return of our much-loved festive film programme for Christmas 2021.

For thousands of Glaswegians, a trip to watch a Christmas film at GFT is a treasured annual tradition, providing a unique festive occasion for family celebrations, work nights-out, first dates and even the occasional marriage proposal. The eclectic programme offers something for every taste. This year’s line-up includes Christmas classics The Bishop’s Wife and The Shop Around the Corner, family favourites Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol and Home Alone, as well as the unconventionally festive cult classic Die Hard.

Our long-running annual screenings of the Frank Capra classic, It’s A Wonderful Life, are the cornerstone of the programme, having earned their place as one of the hottest tickets in Glasgow’s Christmas calendar. In the last 14 calendar years, only one film has beaten It’s A Wonderful Life’s sales figures at the GFT Box Office.

Allison Gardner, Glasgow Film CEO, said: ‘We were heartbroken to have to cancel our Christmas programme in 2020 amid nationwide lockdown restrictions. For many of our regulars, this would have marked the first break in a cherished festive tradition for over a decade. We can’t wait to welcome our Christmas audiences back to the cinema this year to enjoy mince pies, mulled wine and beloved Christmas classics back on the big screen at last. Our Christmas-week screenings always fill up fast, so we encourage audiences to book early to avoid disappointment.’

This year, we will also launch the first-ever online Glasgow Film Theatre Christmas Film Quiz, in partnership with The Stayin’ Inn. The quiz will take place on 9 December, streamed live to film fans’ living rooms via YouTube, hosted by quiz master Andy Dunlop, with the winning team taking home the top prize. Do you think you can guess which film has beaten It’s A Wonderful Life to the top spot in GFT’s Box Office records? The Christmas Film Quiz is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate your film trivia knowledge.

Tickets for the quiz are available now, on a donate-what-you-can sliding scale, with all proceeds going towards our festive fundraising campaign. As a not-for-profit educational charity, we rely on donations, with self-generated income from ticket sales and the cinema’s bars only covering 60% of our running costs in an ordinary year. Having been temporarily closed for most of the past year due to nationwide precautions around public health, the GFT's earned income has been dramatically reduced.

Seonaid Daly, Glasgow Film Executive Director, said: ‘Every ticket bought for our Christmas Quiz will help us secure our future and continue to offer free screenings for children, families and young people, and run programmes like Movie Memories for people with dementia all year round.’

Tickets for GFT’s Christmas Quiz and It’s A Wonderful Life screenings from Friday 17 - Friday 24 December are on sale now from, with more dates to be announced. Tickets for the rest of the Christmas programme will go on sale on Thursday 4 November at 12pm (noon).
