Young Programmers

Welcome to GYFF 2018

Welcome to Glasgow Youth Film Festival 2018. We are the team of Young Programmers for GYFF, and we are really excited to share with you a festival we have been working on all summer. Celebrating our 10th edition, and Scotland’s first ever Year of Young People, we guarantee we have something here for you!

Kicking off with a local zombie musical, we have films taking you to New York, Denmark, France and beyond. We are particularly looking forward to our special Battle of the Bands event at the Closing Gala, School of Rock. And if you are interested in making your first film, we have two free workshops. It’s going to be a weekend full of celebrations for all ages and we hope you have the best time!

Anna Paterson

Favourite film: Do The Right Thing

Pick of the festival: GYFF Shorts: Journey to Stardom

Why: the shorts are a vibrant and eclectic mix of films by many up and coming filmmakers demonstrating their talent. I love to see such a wide range of films.

Ben Warnock

Favourite film: Tropical Malady

Pick of the festival: Skate Kitchen

Why: I feel it is an important coming of age film that tackles important issues in today's society whilst focusing on a woman's coming of age which is refreshing in a genre which is very much male-dominated.

Charlotte Hutton

Favourite film: 10 Things I Hate About You

Pick of the festival: Skate Kitchen

Why: Both the cinematography and direction give the film an authenticity, with the characters’ bizarre and hilarious conversations seeming natural. Although it feels realistic, there’s a dream-like sense to the film - it makes you want to move to NYC straight away and join an all-female skate crew.

Julia-Thumbnail.jpg#asset:1208151

Julia Mazur

Favourite film: probably Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel because visually it’s the most attractive film I think I’ve ever seen.

Pick of the festival: Young Solitude

Why: It’s a very powerful and hard-hitting documentary and it’s in French which always makes films a little fancier.

Kasey-Thumbnail.jpg#asset:1208152

Kasey Ditton

Favourite film: Spirited Away

Pick of the festival: Skate Kitchen

Why: because it has a interesting subject matter of female skaters in New York which highlights issues that aren’t normally tackled within cinema.

Maya Zealey

Favourite film: Little Miss Sunshine

Pick of the festivalSkate Kitchen

Why: It's full of authentic characters and believable relationships, which makes the film so much more powerful as we are invested in the lives of the girls on screen.

Mia-Thumbnail.jpg#asset:1208153

Mia Clayton

Favourite film: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (or any of the other 7 in the series)

Pick of the festival: Anna and the Apocalypse

Why: I’m a huge fan of both zombie movies and musicals, and the fact that it was shot and directed locally was very exciting to me.

Tom-Thumbnail.jpg#asset:1208154

Tom Freeman

Favourite film: Interstellar

Pick of the festival: School of Rock

Why: Jack Black is my favourite actor/comedian and with this being one of his best roles there's no way I couldn't pick it!

Gareth-Thumbnail.jpg#asset:1232398

Gareth Williams

Favourite film: Let the Right One In

Pick of the festival: Skate Kitchen

Why: I always love honest portrayals of young people, and Skate Kitchen feels more truthful than most.
