We're all familiar with Duck and Cover, the alarmingly cutesy Public Service Announcement which recommended diving under your school desk in the event of nuclear attack. But this is just the most famous example of a wealth of now cringe-worthy ephemeral films produced throughout the history of cinema.

The term ‘ephemeral film’ was first coined by film archivist Rick Prelinger to identify films that didn’t fit into any typical cultural or commercial category. These included police training videos, adverts, teaching aids, educational films and PSAs, specifically any film produced for any purpose other than as a work of artistic practice.

Whilst these films now seem long outdated and dubious in their tackling of sex, gender, race and politics, a lot can be gleaned from looking beyond their at times laughably poor production values. Veering wildly from insidious propaganda to the hilariously misguided, these films provide a sociological window into the prejudices, fears and desires of a not so distant past.

Curated by Thomas Grimshaw from London Short Film Festival

Followed by excellent tunes in our Festival Bar, courtesy of Lorenzo Pacitti, Founder of LP Records and Glasgow's favourite new radio station LP Radio. He DJs live every weekday afternoon, while other shows are hosted by bunch of Glasgow's finest folk - check it out!
