We avoid the word ‘best’ in describing our competition films. Rather, the six programmes of the Bill Douglas Award showcase new cinema from around the world that reflects the qualities found in the work of Scotland’s greatest filmmaker: honesty, formal innovation and the supremacy of image and sound in cinematic storytelling. Several of the filmmakers will be in attendance to take part in short Q&As after each screening.

Liberation is never straightforward in this competition programme. The personal is always political, and sexual freedom comes at a cost. The sacred cow Ingmar Bergman is taken to task for his entitled philandering, whilst burgeoning queer identity is played out in the context of the repressive nationalist politics of 1990s Pakistan. A woman meets the lover who allures and repels her, whilst economic necessity leads Portuguese straight boys to test the limits of their sexual flexibility.
