Details

In a large shop in Budapest, it’s the busy run-up to Christmas. A couple of driven sales staff, Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan), are in competition with each other. They are constantly at odds, butting heads and disagreeing on almost everything, yet they’re also unwittingly in an anonymous romantic relationship, which until now has been conducted purely by letter.

This delightful romantic comedy is often overlooked in Christmas lists in favour of James Stewart’s other festive film, It’s a Wonderful Life, but it’s as funny, subtle and joyous as you would expect from the great director Ernst Lubitsch.
