Details

The death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin on 5 March 1953 marked the end of an era. A shocked Soviet Union was plunged into mourning and tens of thousands attended the Moscow funeral. Sergei Loznitsa’s spellbinding documentary uses a wealth of pristinely restored, mostly unseen archive footage of an event that Pravda called 'the Great Farewell’. The film places you right in the heart of what happened, how ordinary people felt and what this grand, grotesque spectacle reveals about the cult of personality and the grip of a tyrannical state then and now. Essential viewing.
