Add Jonah Hill to the list of multi-talented actors who are also outstanding writer/directors. The Oscar-nominated star of The Wolf of Wall Street, Moneyball and countless other favourites now moves behind the camera with Mid90s, a breezy slice of life told with heart, love and understanding.

In 1990s Los Angeles, life seems to be stacking the odds against 13-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic). His older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges) regards him as a convenient punch bag, and his lonely mother Dabney (Katherine Waterston) can’t provide the comfort he needs. What would it take to become one of the cool kids? Perhaps hanging out with the regulars at the Motor Avenue skate shop could be his passport to winning friends and fitting in.

Beautifully in tune with the sounds and feel of the period, Mid90s shows that Hill has a keen eye for detail, a flawless dedication to authenticity, and the ability to tease the best from his actors. Suljic is a shining star as Stevie, winning your heart as someone who wears life’s blows as badges of honour. We are thrilled to be opening the 2019 festival with this warm, hilarious celebration of the irrepressible, never-say-die spirit.
