Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen grew up in Latvia during the Soviet rule of the 1970s and 1980s. The Cold War was at its height and the legacy of the Second World War haunted a generation. My Favorite War combines archive footage, family photos, interviews and animation to provide a sense of the country and the life that Ilze led. A model citizen who took Soviet propaganda at face value and joined a Communist youth group, her burning ambition to become a journalist forced her to develop a mind of her own. A fascinating coming-of-age story that mirrors a country’s quest for independence.
