Inspired by the films of Akira Kurosawa, Japanese icon Shin’ya Tsukamoto offers a modern take on the classic samurai film with his latest feature. Killing follows a lone ronin earning a living in the rice paddies of an isolated farm. When an older samurai arrives looking to recruit skilled fighters, the young man begins to ponder on the heavy burden of taking a life and whether he is capable of such an act. Littered with jarring and intense action sequences, Tsukamoto crafts a strikingly visceral film that evokes both the samurai genre’s mood and spirit.
