Ida Lupino: On Dangerous Ground

Ida Lupino (1918–1995) was a trailblazer. The London-born actor was initially dubbed the ‘English Jean Harlow’, but made her mark playing bossy femme fatales, floozies and gangster’s molls in classic thrillers of the 1940s. By the following decade she was the only female director working in the Hollywood system. Fiercely independent, her tough, tightly coiled low-budget films were way ahead of their time in tackling taboos, exploring social issues and creating complex female characters. Lupino subsequently became a versatile and vastly prolific television director, working on every popular prime time show of the period, from The Twilight Zone to Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Virginian and Bewitched. Our centenary tribute to this maverick includes two of her most famous acting roles and three films that she directed.
