On Friday night, GFF19 tumbled down the rabbit hole and into the virtual world in search of Morpheus, Trinity and Neo, at Glasgow’s legendary Argyle Street Arches for the first of two eagerly anticipated, 20th anniversary screenings of The Matrix.

Before the screening, the audience immersed themselves in augmented reality via an exclusive smartphone app, allowing them to see behind the code of The Matrix and seek out the sentinels that were hunting for the Nebuchadnezzar. There was even a ‘bullet time’ camera rig – made possible by We Throw Switches – for attendees to strike a pose and create a unique, digital memento of the special event.

We’ve had our eye on you for some time now, Mr. Anderson...

Scare Scotland sent their top Agents along to keep an eye out for potential members of The Resistance, interrogating anyone that looked like they were holding information on the location of The One. In true Matrix fashion, there was even a ringing phone located in the lobby, but dare you answer that chilling call from Agent Smith?

Many audience members came along looking slick in full Matrix attire; some adorned the iconic shades and long jackets of their favourite ‘Redpill’ while others appeared to have been assimilated into the ranks of the Agents. Print Clan were also there with their screen-printing wizardry, creating limited edition GFF19 t-shirts for the special event.

After enjoying the exhibits and evading the clutches of the Agents, audience members grabbed a drink from the bar and settled into their seat, in the perfect location for The Wachowskis’ sci-fi smash hit. On turning 20 years old, The Matrix still holds up – a testament to The Wachowskis’ creative minds and impeccable filmmaking. Just ask anyone that was there! Following the screening, attendees enjoyed an after-party in the industrial vibes of Argyle Street Arches.

Then on Saturday we did it all again for our second and final screening of this spoon-bending cult classic.
