Five years after Rebel Without a Cause, Nouvelle Vague’s own rebel Jean-Luc Godard brought a very different sensibility to his portrait of an angry, iconoclastic generation restless for change. Jean-Paul Belmondo’s Michel models himself on macho American tough guys and doesn’t abide by anyone’s rules, arriving in Paris from the Riviera with the law on his tail. He treats his American girlfriend Patricia (Jean Seberg) with disdain, yet hopes she will join him on his reckless adventure as they hurtle towards oblivion. A stylistically daring tale of love on the run.

There is simply no other film which demonstrates so perfectly what it feels like to be young and in love
