A master of haunting imagery and deadpan absurdity, Roy Andersson returns with another mournful reflection on human existence. Constructed as a series of eerie vignettes, the film depicts a topsy turvy world unaware of what truly matters. The insignificant assumes an immense importance whilst something monumental barely registers. An imperious narrator leads us through apocalyptic events whilst a recurring image shows a couple floating over a bombed-out city once filled with life and culture. There is a sense of impending doom in every forlorn frame.
