Submissions for Glasgow Film Festival 2020 open today

Submissions for Glasgow Film Festival 2020 open today

Feature submissions are now open for Glasgow Film Festival 2020. GFF will celebrate its 16th edition next year, running from 26 February to 8 March, and filmmakers are encouraged to take this opportunity to enter their work for consideration in the prestigious programme.

GFF is a major date in the festival calendar, with many UK distributors and exhibitors attending. Perfectly placed in February as a launch pad for spring and summer releases, GFF provides a high-profile platform for film professionals, introducing some of the best new films to discerning audiences, the film industry, and specialist and national press.

Audience admissions for GFF19 were a record-breaking 42,224, ensuring that films included in the programme for the 12-day festival were screened to engaged and enthusiastic crowds of film-lovers.

The festival’s directors are committed to supporting emerging talent and providing audiences with the opportunity to see the best of world cinema.

Fiction, documentary, animation and experimental features are all sought for inclusion in the 2020 programme. Films selected previously through this process have played to enthusiastic audiences at GFF over the years, and gone on to secure wider distribution.

Ten submitted films were screened at GFF19: Dead Good, Pause, Julia Blue, Kia and Cosmos, The Feeling of Being Watched, Connect, Love Movie, The Science of Ghosts, Float Like a Butterfly and Final Ascent.

Connect, the directorial debut of Marilyn Edmond following the story of Brian (Kevin Guthrie), a young man battling with his mental health, was picked up for release by Studio Soho Distribution after they were introduced at a GFF Industry Focus one-to-one meeting.

Robbie Fraser, producer and director of Final Ascent, said: “I am a little biased about Glasgow Film Festival. It is my hometown festival and GFF has hosted premieres of all my cinema documentaries, including a wonderful sell-out UK premiere for my last, Final Ascent: The Legend of Hamish MacInnes, at GFF 2019. If you are considering submitting to Glasgow Film Festival I can only say that your film will be assessed by a team of committed and tasteful cinephiles led by Allison Gardner and Allan Hunter; that if you are selected your work will be viewed by discerning, film-literate and enthusiastic audiences; and that if you can make it along you will receive the warmest of welcomes in our city. You won't regret it.”

Rehana Rose, director of Dead Good, the life-affirming documentary about ‘giving death back to the people,’ said: “Before submitting my first feature doc, I read with interest that Glasgow Film Festival team pride themselves on watching every submission, especially those coming through independently. That was such good news for a first-time filmmaker to hear. So I submitted and when I heard back from the programming team that Dead Good was officially selected for GFF I was delighted. And rather over-excited.

“From that point on I felt very loved and cared for as many different members of the festival got in touch with me to organise various logistics. Every one of them were so enthusiastic and their attention to detail was second to none. I also really appreciated their patience with me.

“I attended the festival for our two screenings and managed to fit in a few industry events too. Networking was really inclusive and fun. It was also lovely to put faces to names of many of the team. And our screenings were fantastic; a wonderful Q&A with festival programmer Chris with the audience very keen to ask many questions. I truly love film festivals that have a good mix of industry and public attendance. And I fell in love with Glasgow.”
