Are you aged between 18-21?

Do you want to learn about film programming?

Would you enjoy running your own film screening event?

Maybe you could be one of our Young Selectors for Glasgow Film Festival 2021!

What is it?

Glasgow Film is looking for a group of young people to join our Young Selectors Programme for Glasgow Film Festival 2021.

No experience of working with film is necessary. However, an interest in films is essential. In return for your commitment, you’ll receive full and free access to Glasgow Film Festival’s Industry programme, learn what goes on behind the scenes at Glasgow Film Festival and get to meet other like-minded people.


What will I gain?

The Young Selectors programme will cover 3 key elements during the festival:

  • Curation

    • Watch festival films before the general public 

    • Select your favourites to champion, including recording film introductions and writing programme notes

    • Learn how festivals select films and how festival programming works from the Glasgow Film team 

  • Careers

    • Get insights into the roles of the festival team and learn about careers in festivals, cinemas and filmmaking and distribution

    • Free Industry pass for GFF 2021

    • Bespoke careers session from the Glasgow Film team 

    • Certificate and written reference upon completion of the programme (subject to attendance and commitment levels)

  • Content

    • Learn about review writing and creating content for social media

    • Create video and digital content


Who can apply?

To apply to join the programme you must:

  • Have a passion for films

  • Be aged between 18 and 21

  • Live in Glasgow (you must have a Glasgow postcode)

  • Be available on all the dates listed below

Key Dates and Activities for Young Selectors Programme

Tuesday 1 December 2020 - Induction

This evening will provide you with an opportunity to meet the professionals who work at GFT and find out about the different people involved in putting on a film festival. It will also be a chance to meet with the rest of the group and get to know one another.

Saturday 5 December - Film discussion day 1

You will be provided with screener links to watch 3 festival films in advance of this meeting. 

A full day of discussing festival films. During this session we’ll be discussing films, finding out all about how to appeal to a range of audiences and how to write reviews, create online content about and plan events around these films.

Saturday 12 December - Film discussion day 2

You will be provided with screener links to watch 3 festival films in advance of this meeting. 

A second full day of discussing festival films. During this session we’ll be discussing films, as we did during discussion day 2 but the group will decide on which of the films will be selected as part of the Young Selectors thread for GFF 2021.

Weeknight Planning Meetings

During the midweek meeting, we’ll be finalising plans and making sure everything is in place for the festival. We’ll be working on our marketing and promotion to make sure that our screening and event is a sell-out.

Glasgow Film Festival 2021

Events throughout 24 February – 7 March 2021

You will attend the screening and event you have selected and planned. This may involve presenting an introduction or hosting a post-film discussion. These may be online or in-person.


Thursday 18 March - Evaluation

After the festival is over, you will join us for an evening of evaluating your efforts and reflecting on the experience and what you have learned.
