CineMasters: Bill Forsyth

Rich Text

August ushers in a celebration of Scottish filmmaker Bill Forsyth at the GFT. Forsyth is a director whose unique and quirky style stood strong and independent during a time of critical underfunding for the arts in Britain, with his work acting as a beacon for other emergent filmmakers. After the success of last month’s Local Hero screenings helped to reaffirm the director’s cult status among Glasgow audiences, we’ve decided to dust off three more classics from his career.

We’ll be kicking of the season with 1979’s That Sinking Feeling, a comedic tale of life on the dole for four young enterprising Glaswegians. We will also have select screenings of Comfort and Joy, the director’s absurd take on the infamous ice-cream wars of 1980s Glasgow. And of course it wouldn’t be a proper Bill Forsyth season without his much-beloved breakthrough Gregory’s Girl, which receives a hotly-anticipated 4K restoration courtesy of BFI this month (bella, bella!). To mark the occasion we will be screening the cult favourite followed by a very special Q&A with members of the original cast. Grab your tickets while you can because you won’t want to miss this one.
