After being shot in secret, the announcement of The Seed of The Sacred fig led to threats of severe punishment and lengthy jail terms from the Iranian government forcing some cast and crew to leave the country. They continue to live in exile.
The plot centres around Iman, an investigating judge at the revolutionary court in Tehran, where he is required to approve the judgements presented to him by his superiors – including death sentences – without assessing the evidence. For his and his family's protection, Iman must keep his anonymity. As nationwide political protests against the authoritarian government intensify due to the death of a young woman, he finds himself surrounded by suspicion and paranoia, causing him even to doubt the women in his own family.
