Seven Samurai

Rice farmers hire a band of samurai to defend them against marauding bandits in Akira Kurosawa’s influential epic, a touchstone for action movies ever since. Ranked at number 20 in Sight & Sound's 2022 Greatest Films of All Time critics’ poll. Akira Kurosawa followed the breakthrough international acclaim for Rashomon (1950) and Ikiru (1952) with this three-and-a-half-hour jidaigeki (period drama) set during Japan’s turbulent 16th century. Strongly influenced by the poetic westerns of John Ford, Kurosawa’s story of farmers recruiting a motley troupe of samurai to help them fend off bandits in turn had a huge impact on subsequent westerns and action films. 'The glorious vigour and strength of this film is presented with such theatrical relish and flair: its energy flashes out of the screen like a sword' ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ - The Guardian Japanese with English subtitles. Screening with a 15-minute intermission. Screening as part of Art of Action – a major UK-wide celebration of big screen action done for real, focusing on the actors and stunt performers risking life and limb to create some of the most memorable on-screen action, supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network. ----- Year of Celebration Film - Donate £50 at checkout 2024 marks 85 years since our cinema (originally the Cosmo) was built, 50 years since GFT was founded and the 20th edition of Glasgow Film Festival.
