Punk the Capital + Q&A

Followed by a Q&A with musician Alec MacKaye and director James June Schneider. When punk rock exploded in Washington DC, it was a mighty convergence of powerful music, friendships, and clear minds. It was an unlikely place but the perfect time. Punk the Capital explores this inspiring story of how a punk subculture took root in the US Capital (1976 to 1983). Situating D.C. punk within the larger narratives of punk and rock n' roll, this film reveals why the sounds and ideas from this radical music scene continue to influence and inspire around the world. It dives into a movement that not only redefined a genre but that created a widely employed model for DIY culture and political engagement. This event corresponds with the Hard Art DC 1979 photo and book exhibition at Summerhall in Edinburgh, opening on 26 July. YEAR OF CELEBRATION: 2024 marks 85 years since our cinema (originally the Cosmo) was built, 50 years since GFT was founded and the 20th edition of Glasgow Film Festival. Whilst our box office and bar sales only cover around 50% of our annual costs and help keep the film reels rolling, we rely on donations and fundraising to run our education and community activities. We need your help! Celebrate 50 years of GFT by donating £50 at checkout. A £50 donation also secures your seat at our special January screening. Find out more or donate via glasgowfilm.org/donate.
