Marielle Heller once again proves to be one of cinema’s most exciting filmmakers, with this fabulous genre-bending exploration of motherhood.
Amy Adams’s Mother puts her career on hold to parent her young toddler. The transformation of her feelings, sense of self and relationship to the world spark a change in her that is as liberating as it is radical. Adapted from Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed 2021 novel, Nightbitch is a modern feminist fable that plays on traditional tropes to examine the role of motherhood in a society where women still battle to ‘have it all’. Adams and Scoot McNairy offer fearless performances as the modern couple. But this is a tale for the sleepless and Adams gives a career-best performance, embracing the heightened emotions of her character. For the originality with which it captures the magic and chaos of motherhood, it marks another success for Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood).
The screening at 5.40pm on Monday 9 December will be followed by a recorded Q&A with director Marielle Heller, produced by Reclaim the Frame - championing marginalised perspectives in cinema.

Give a gift to GFT this Christmas
This holiday season, we’re celebrating not only Christmas but also 85 years since our cinema's original opening, 50 years of GFT, and the 20th Glasgow Film Festival. Whilst our box office and bar sales only cover around 50% of our annual costs and help keep the film reels rolling, we rely on donations and fundraising to run our education and community activities. We need your help!
Celebrate 50 years of GFT by donating £50. A £50 donation also secures your seat at our special January screening.
