Audrey Diwan follows her Venice Golden Lion win for Happening with an adaptation of Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel Emmanuelle, described as “a sensual thriller”. Noémie Merlant takes over the role first incarnated by Sylvia Kristel whose business trip to Hong Kong awakens an insatiability. Diwan’s film, freely adapted from Arsan’s novel, casts a female gaze on the intimate quest of the woman whose name still evokes one of cinema’s most provocative characters. The novel was previously made into a 1974 film directed by Just Jaeckin.
Screening as part of French Film Festival UK.
