The Lovers Les Amants

In this deeply felt and luxuriously filmed fairy tale for grown-ups, Moreau is a restless bourgeois wife whose eye wanders from both her husband and her lover to an attractive passing stranger (Jean-Marc Bory). With its frank depiction of sexuality, Les Amants caused controversy across the globe, being censored and attacked for obscenity. Almost 60 years later, it still glistens with sensuality and seductive storytelling. Screening on 35mm.

Director Louis Malle Cast Jeanne Moreau, Alain Cuny, Jean-Marc Bory, France 1958, 1h28m, subtitles, 15

The Fire Within Le feu follet

Alain Leroy (Maurice Ronet), a self-destructive writer, resolves to kill himself and spends the next 24 hours trying to reconnect with a host of wayward friends. For the most part, they think their friend is being dramatic and will snap out of it. Only Jeanne (Jeanne Moreau) seems to take it at face value, but accepts her own helplessness to do anything about it. Screening on 35mm.

Director Louis Malle Cast Jeanne Moreau, Maurice Ronet, Bernard Noël, France 1963, 1h50m, subtitles, 12
