Join us this LGBTQ+ History Month for a programme of films that explore the varied experiences of LGBTQ+ people in socialist Eastern Europe. The films in this season are radically defiant and nuanced and look at themes such as desire, politics and belonging with tenderness and complexity.
Originally screened as part of Cinema Rediscovered in 2024 and curated by Fedor Tot and Siavash Minoukadeh, Queer Cinema from the Eastern Bloc has been brought to GFT by curator Rosie Beattie. This season will include a special introduction to the powerful but under-seen East German film Coming Out (1989) from University of Glasgow Lecturer Stephan Ehrig, and the Scottish-based Eastern European film festival Samizdat will present a short film to accompany the screening of 100 Days Before the Command (1990).
